Ooty Train
Heritage Pride
Nilgiri Mountain Railways (NMR) built between 1891 and 1899, was opened for traffic on 15th June 1899. It connects Mettupalayam with Udhagamandalam (ooty) via Coonoor, passing through Kallar, Adderly, Runnymede, Wellington, Aruvankadu, ketti and Lovedale stations. It is a UNESCO recognized heritage site, managed by salem division, Southern railway. Powered by Steam Locomotives between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, using the unique Alternate Biting Teeth Rack and Pinion system to climb the steepest gradient in Asia, with gradient of 1 in 12 (8.33%) and by Diesel Locomotives between Coonoor and Ooty. The journey takes around 4 hours 50 minutes up and 3 hours 35 minutes down.

Forest College and Research Institute
The Forest College and Research Institute (FC &RI) is located at Mettupalayam in the sylvan surroundings of Jakanari Reserved Forest, about 40 km north of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) main campus, Coimbatore. It is situated over a sprawling expanse of 200 ha of reserved forest, located of the foothills of Nilgiris on the Kotagiri road. The college is perched at an altitude of 300 m with a longitude of 11.19'N, latitude of 77.56'E and enjoys an annual rainfall of 830 mm. The mean maximum and minimum temperature are 32.2oC and 23.2oC respectively.
