Botanical Garden

This garden wad laid out in 1897 by Marquis of Tweedale and is spread over 55 acres. It is a paradise to avoid botanists and people with green fingers, Well over 650 species of plants are in the garden, Some very rare. (Like the Corktree, which id probably the only such tree in India, the Paper bark tree and Monkey puzzle tree monkeys cannot climb this tree). The garden also has the fossil of a tree trunk believed to be 20 million year old. A flower show an exhibition of rare plant species is held every year in the month of May at this garden.

Rose Garden

"A Rose by any other name would still smell just as sweet". And this statement will be proved true when you visit the Rose Garden situated less then a km from Charring cross, this garden has the largest collection of rose in the country. It has around 2500 varieties of roses. which will leave you spellbound.

Doddabetta

It is the highest peak (2623 meters) in the Nilgiris. It lies at the junction of Eastern and Western Ghats. It is about 10 kms from Ooty. Doddabetta is surrounded by dense shoals. From here, you can have a panoramic view of the hills and plains below particularly Ooty town and near-by villages. The sunset is spectacular from this view point. An added attraction is a telescope house.

Boat House

This artificial lake was constructed in 1824 by Mr. John Sullivan, the first collector of Ooty. It is a popular tourist spot. A Wide range of boats are available at the boat house to suit varied tastes and budgets. A toy train and amusement park are added attractions.

Children's Park

The mini garden, as is generally known can be visited on the way to Boat House. This is a place where you can spend some quality time with your tiny tots, while they enjoy a day of fun here.

Government Museum

It is located on Ooty – Mysore road near old rohini theatre, 2kms from Bus stand. It displays variety of tribal objects, districts ecological details representative sculptural arts and crafts of Tamilnadu. This museum is educationally beneficial to both locals and tourists.

Arboretum

The arboretum as the name suggests is a tree park and is fairly small in size covering an area of just over 1.5 hectares. It situated on the way to Fern Hill Palace.

Ketti Valley View

This view point is located 7kms from ooty on the Ooty – Coonoor road. The valley is the 2nd largest in the world. This idyllic spot is a cluster of tiny villages that extend to the plains of Coimbatore and Mysore plateau.

Kamaraj Sagar Dam

This dam is situated 9 kms from the Main bus stand. It is a good picnic spot, Fishing and Nature study is also done here.

It is located on the Ooty – Mysore road, 12 kms from Ooty. Overlooking a sheer precipice of several hundred metres, it offers a phenomenal view of vast stretches of forests.

Shooting Medu

It is located on Ooty – Mysore road, 14 kms from Ooty. It is film shooting spot. Hand Gliding, Adventure sports, Point – to – point Horse Race conducted by Madras Regimental Centre take place at "Windy Saddle" on one side of shooting medu.

Pykara Boat House

The Pykara lake is situated 21 kms from Ooty on the Ooty – Mysore road. A boat ride on Pykara is enjoyable. A restaurant is also available. Pykara is a good picnic location and is very popular with Movie Makers of this country. It attracts many people because of the serene atmosphere and the shimmering blue water.

Pykara Falls

The Pykara falls is also 21kms from Ooty on the Ooty – Mysore road. Comprising gentle and a wide series of cascade, this great spot for picnics, there is also dam near by.

Avalanche

Avalanche is situated 28 kms from ooty town, so named after an avalanche which occurred there in 1823. That was then, but presently avalanche is a "Paradise on Earth", surrounded by undisturbed forests. It has interesting treks and is a boon to bird enthusiasts. Avalanche is also famous for its trout fisheries and orchid cultivations.

Western Catchment

It is about 20 kms from Parson's Valley, is consists of rolling grassy downs interspersed with temperate shoals occupying depression and valleys. This place is anecological marvel and is a highly protected zone.

Glenmorgan

It is 17kms from Ooty. An ecologically rich forestry spot. There is an electricity board winch which carries staff from Glenmmorgan view point to power house in singra. All the 4kms of the winch track passes through undistributed shoals and wildlife habitat. Prior permission of EB authorities should be obtained to enter the view point zone. This place is also rife with history as it was constructed by German prisoners. It is a very good picnic spot.

Mukurthi National Park &Peak

This national park is about 40 kms from Ooty. The Mukurthi peak is located on the south eastern corner of the Nilgiri plateau. It is home to several endemic species of flora and fauna(many of which are endangered). The area contains a viable population of the Nilgiri Thar (Himitragus hilocrius). The silent valley is located on the western side of these ranges. There is also the beautiful Mukuruthi lake within the park. This is a 'must see' place for naturalists. Here is nothing as beautiful as 'Natural Beauty' and the Mukurthi with all fauna is an epitome of it. This place is ideal for long treks too.

Horse Racing

A very popular spot during the summer (April, May &June). You can see some of the best thoroughbreds running in their glory at the Race Course, located in the heart of the town is about 2.4 kms long and is one of the most famous courses in India.

This Museum located on the way to Ooty – Coonoor road, Wax statue making involves computerised digital imaging techniques, traditional and conventional sculpting and molding methodologies.

Tea Museum

It's located on the way to Doddabetta. You can visit the tea factory and also watch the tea Demonstration of processing. From the factory you can see the full view of Ooty town.

Bus Stand

It's located on the way between Ooty and Coimbatore 19 kms from Ooty. It is second largest hill station in Nilgiris.

Sim's Park

Sim's Park in Upper Coonoor on the Kotagiri road is so named after J.D. Sim a member of the governor's Council, who took great effort in laying this public park and garden in 1874 – 75. The garden is well laid with ornamental plants and is aesthetically pleasing. At this park the Tamil Nadu government, exhibits the Fruit and Vegetable show during the month of May. The Pomological station, Silk Farm and the Pasteur's Institute are situated close by.

It's located on the way from Coonoor to Kotagiri 1.5 kms Sim's Park. You can visit tea gardens, The tea factory and also watch the tea Demonstration of tea processing.
Other popular places nearby are Golf Course view, Sunset view, Film Shooting and Palan Khet ('Raja Hindu point stani fame').

Lamb's Rock

This view spot is within a reserve forest about 8 kms from Coonoor. It is named after Capt. Lamb who had spend energy, time and money to open path to this spot. When you stand here, you are actually on a precipice overlooking a phenomenal view all the way to Coimbatore plains.

Dolphin's Nose

About 12 kms from Coonoor along the same road to Lamb's Rock is the amazing view point. Dolphin's Nose of an uprushing dolphin's nose. Amidst dense Sholas Criss – Crossed by winding road, you can get a view of the St. Cautherine falls from here.

Lady Canning Seat

Lady Canning Seat is a couple of kilometres further on the road from Lamb's rock. It is marked by a small house and gives a panoramic view of vast tea estate. This place is also of historical importance, as this is the place where lady canning spent her time. While her husband Lord canning recuperated after the rising of 1857.

Law Falls

This place is a beautiful picnic spot, situated 4 kms on Coonoor – Mettupalayam road. The height of the falls is about 180ft. This charming water falls is a paradise for naturalists.

Wellington

This is a Military town with rows of Barracks built in 1852. An Indian Army regiment and the Defence staff college which is the one of its kind in Indian are situated.

The Droog (Pakkasuramalai)

This picnic spot was once used by Tipu Sultan as an outpost. It is 15 kms from Coonoor and stands 6000 feet high overlooking the plains. One has to go through 'Non such Tea Estate' and trek down for about 4 kms to the ruins of the fortress Bird watchers will love this place.

Katery Falls & Dam

If you take a diversion from Coonoor on the kundha road about 1 km from kendala village. Water from the katery dam flows as a falls. This is one of the highest falls in the Nilgiris. The first ever hydel power plant in the country, to run the cordite. Factory at auvankadu was established at the foot of these in the year 1902.

Kodanad View Point

This view point is located about 20 kms from kothagiri on the eastern edges on the nilgiris. On the road leading to the view point, you get very picturesque, and panoramic view of tea estates, you also see a fantastic view of the river Moyar, dividing the Nilgiris and erode districts. You can also see the Tamil nadu and Karnataka state boarders. Spectacular summaries can be experienced from this point Vast expanse of paddy fields. Picturesque Thengumarada village and fantastic rock formations including the Ranaswamy Peak present an unforgettable sight.

St. Catherine Water Falls

This Water fall is 8 kms from kothagiri and is the second highest in the district (250 ft). It is named after the wife of Mr. M. D. Cockburn, the pioneer planter of Kothagiri. There is a footpath surrounded by beautiful woods which leads upto the falls. It presents a lovely view of the sweeps of forests and woodlands.

Long Wood Shola

The long wood shoal is the source of pure sprinking water for the people living in kothagiri town. This shoal is integral part the very fragile Nilgiri eco-system. The presentation of this shoal forest is very vital. There is a very picturesque trekking path which goes through this scene shoal.

Rangaswamy Peak & Pillar

This site is about 20 kms from kothagiri (via) Kil – Kothagiri. The peak is conical and is 5885 feet above MSL. The site is sacred to the Irula (a tribe of the Nilgiris) to the west of the peak is a huge detached pillar of rock rising abruptly. This extraordinary isolated rock formation with precipitous sites is almost mystical in nature. This Pillar is sheer rock 400 ft High. It possible to reach the base of the pillar but you will have to be unusually adventurous.

Frog Hill View

It is 11 kms on the Ooty – Gudalur road. You can see the frog shape of the hill. It is not just vivid imagination but very realistic.

Needle Rock Hill & view Point

It is 8 kms on the Gudalur – Ooty road, this view point gives you an amazing 360 degree view. The sunsets from here on clear day will be leave you spellbound, from here you have panoramic view of mudumalai wildlife Sanctuary and Gudalur town.

Theppakadu Elephant Camp

It is 17 kms from Gudalur. The elephant Camp attracts a lot of tourists especially at "the pooja time". A day spent here will give you a lot of information about elephants i.e., Their eating habits, bathing etc., The elephant rides have to be booked at Ooty.

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary &Tiger Reserve

It is national park, 8 kms from Gudalur. This is the first Sanctuary to be set up in india and forms part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Park. The Sanctuary extends over an area of 321 sq. Kms in the junction of three states via Tamil nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
A variety of habitat ranging from topical forest, moist teak, try teak forest, secondary grasslands and swamps are found here.
It has a rich wildlife, like Elephants, Gaur, Tiger, Panther, Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Porcupine etc.,
Birds like – Minivets, Hornbill, Fairy Blue birds, Jungle fowls etc., are also found here.
Reptiles like Puthon, Monitor lizards, Flying lizards etc., Can also be seen here.
The Moyar river is the main water source here and is a sight by itself. This place also has a few watch towers, from which one can observe animals. Thus place is especially for real nature enthusiasts.

Moyar Water Falls

It is located inside the Mudumalai Sanctuary, 55 kms from Gudalur. Another water falls, 38 kms from Gudalur, via Masinagudi, too is full of scenic beauty.

Kalhatty Water Falls

It is about 13 kms from Ooty, on the Ooty – Mysore road via the kalhatty Ghats. The surrounding are exhilarating with a profusion of wild flowers. The height of the falls is 100 ft. And its makes a good picnic spot. People who enjoy hiking and trekking will also love this place.
